Professor Matthew Glover Addo Assumes Office as New Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University of Ghana
The Catholic University of Ghana (CUG), Fiapre, has
welcomed a new era in its academic leadership with the appointment of Professor Matthew Glover Addo, a
distinguished microbiologist and molecular biologist, as the new
Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Addo will officially take over office on Monday,
September 1, 2025, at a brief handing-over ceremony following a welcoming
meeting with the University community. Later in the day, he will pay a courtesy
call on the Bishop of Sunyani, who also serves as the Episcopal Moderator of
the University.
Born on May 2,
1965, Professor Addo brings to CUG over 23 years of rich academic, research, and administrative
experience at the Kwame Nkrumah
University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and beyond. He is the
immediate past Director of the Institute of Distance Learning at KNUST and a
former Dean of the Faculty of Biosciences.
His academic journey
has taken him across Ghana, Norway, and France, where he earned multiple
advanced degrees including simultaneous PhDs in Molecular Biology from Université Paris XI, France and in
Microbiology from KNUST. His
groundbreaking doctoral work identified four new nuclear genes involved in
mitochondrial stability, contributing significantly to global molecular biology
research.
As part of his
itinerary in his first week at CUG, Professor Addo will engage Management,
Deans, Heads of Department, Senior Members, and staff of the University. From
Thursday onwards, he is expected to pay courtesy calls on key stakeholders
including the Bono Regional Minister, traditional authorities, and heads of
security agencies.
Later in September,
he will hold his first official meeting with the student body to outline his
vision for the University.
Prof. Addo has an
impressive record of board-level and institutional leadership, having served on
several high-profile committees at KNUST and as a council member of other
universities and institutions. In 2018, he was voted Best Senior Member (Teaching) at the KNUST College of
Science Excellence Awards.
The Catholic
University community is optimistic that his blend of international academic
exposure, research excellence, and leadership experience will position CUG for
greater growth in teaching, research, and community engagement.
