On the 4th of March 2024, the global community celebrates World Engineering Day, honouring the indispensable contributions of engineers worldwide in shaping a sustainable future. From the vibrant corridors of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) to the dynamic classrooms of local schools, the spirit of innovation and collaboration resonated deeply in Ghana's Bono Region.

The event witnessed keen involvement from esteemed educational establishments including Peprah Agyemang Capital School, Glory Kinder Care School, UENR Basic School, and Holy Spirit School. Particularly noteworthy was the active participation of the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhiE) student chapters from both Sunyani Technical University (STU) and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR). This engagement was orchestrated by Ing. Dr. Emmanuel Nyantakyi, who not only serves as the chairman of the GhiE branch in the Bono Region but also leads its members. Together, they convened to commemorate this significant occasion.

Under the theme "Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World," the celebration highlighted the crucial role of engineering in tackling global challenges and advancing sustainable development goals.

Professor John Kuwornu, the Pro Vice Chancellor of UENR, welcomed participants on behalf of Vice Chancellor Elvis Asare Bediako, emphasizing the importance of recognizing engineers' contributions to modern society. He underscored the need to raise public awareness about the pivotal role engineering plays in shaping our world, as designated by the UNESCO proclamation of World Engineering Day on March 4.

As a guest of honour, Professor Kwadwo Adinkra Appiah, the Vice Chancellor of STU, delivered an impassioned address, challenging attendees to seize the opportunity to make a significant impact on Ghana's economic transformation. He emphasized that engineering is central to realizing the nation's aspirations and achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Professor Appiah's call resonated strongly, particularly with the youth in attendance. STU's commitment to inclusivity and excellence was underscored through initiatives such as a 20% discount on school fees for female taking engineering courses and the establishment of a student support fund. These efforts aim to empower the next generation of engineers, irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds.

As the day unfolded, it became evident that this celebration was more than just a gathering; it was a testament to the collective power of innovation and collaboration. Attendees witnessed first-hand how engineers are driving positive change, propelling Ghana towards a future characterized by sustainability, prosperity, and inclusivity.

Speaking with attendees, particularly students, revealed a profound impact. Many expressed feeling enlightened and empowered to make informed decisions about their future careers.

As the echoes of Professor Appiah's words lingered, they served as a reminder of our collective responsibility to shape a better world. In Ghana's Bono Region, World Engineering Day served as a beacon of hope and inspiration, uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds in a shared commitment to building a brighter tomorrow.

During his closing speech, Ing. Dr. Nyantakyi emphasized the significance of maintaining professional standards in engineering projects and urged politicians to abstain from interfering in such endeavors.

As we reflect on today's events, let us carry forward the spirit of innovation and collaboration. With determination and vision, we can overcome any challenge and realize our collective aspirations for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
