CAPACITY BUILDING AND FARM INPUT DISTRIBUTION IN SUNYANI-FIAPRE
Sunyani, Bono Region – In a remarkable initiative
aimed at empowering female farmers and promoting food security, over 200 young
women participated in a capacity-building and farm input distribution program
held on July 24, 2024, at Ideas Hotel, Sunyani-Fiapre. The event was organized
by WAN Hive Ghana, a community of enterprising female entrepreneurs and
innovators, in collaboration with Kosmos Innovation Centre.
The program, titled “Women’s Role in Ensuring Food
Security,” highlighted the crucial contributions of women in agriculture,
particularly in the Bono region, where they dominate the value chain from input
supply to support services.
The Fiapre Traditional Authority, led by Nana
Kwadwo Donyina Kusi II, was present to support the initiative, alongside other
key stakeholders, including Assemblyman of Fiapre, Mad. Janet Issifu (CEO, WAN
Hive Ghana), Mad. Felicia Asabea Boadu (Regional WIAD Officer, Department of Agriculture),
Mad. Phillipa Mensah (Lead Social Protection, World Food Forum), and Mad. Mercy
(Women’s Boot Camp In-Charge, Kosmos Innovation Centre). The event was also
covered by various media outlets.
During the program, Mad. Felicia Boadu led a
session on farming as a business, where she educated the participants on
essential agricultural knowledge, business skills, technical and management
skills, regulatory knowledge, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving
techniques. The focus was on equipping the farmers with the tools and knowledge
needed to thrive in the agricultural sector.
Mad. Phillipa Mensah further emphasized the
importance of ensuring food security through sustainable agricultural
practices, strengthening food systems, supporting smallholder farmers, and
addressing climate change. Her presentation underscored the need for
accessible, quality, and affordable food for all, throughout the year.
In their speeches, Mad. Mercy, Mad. Janet Issifu,
and Nana Donyina Kusi II encouraged the female farmers to remain resilient and
committed to farming as a business. They emphasized the significance of their
role in the agricultural sector and urged them to leverage the inputs provided
to achieve positive outcomes.
At the conclusion of the event, each of the 200
female youth farmers received a pair of wellington boots, a knapsack spraying
machine, a can of vegetable seeds, and a large bottle of weedicides, courtesy

in their agricultural activities and help them achieve greater productivity.
The event concluded with a strong message:
supporting and empowering women in agriculture is essential for achieving
global food security, as their contributions are indispensable to the entire
food system.
