WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE CELEBRATED AT 6TH GOLD IN THE SOIL AWARDS IN SUNYANI

 Sunyani, Bono Region – 9th-10th July 2024

The Agrihouse Foundation, in collaboration with the Bono Regional Department of Agriculture, hosted the 6th annual Women in Food and Agricultural Leadership Forum and Gold in the Soil Awards, a two-day event dedicated to celebrating and empowering women in agriculture. Held under the theme "Overcoming Barriers to Women Agribusiness Development: The Role of Stakeholders," the event brought together a diverse group of participants, including farmers, agro-processors, government representatives, development partners, and the media.

The forum, funded by the esteemed Alberta Akosa, was graced by the presence of prominent figures such as Bono Regional Minister Justina Awo Banahene, Queen Mothers from across the region, and representatives from various farmer associations and schools. The event's objective was clear: to foster a collaborative environment for the exchange of ideas, the formation of impactful partnerships, and the empowerment of rural women across the agricultural value chain.

Aims and Activities

The event was meticulously planned to provide participants with a wealth of knowledge and opportunities for growth. Over the two days, attendees engaged in a series of activities including:

  • Training Sessions: Providing essential skills and knowledge in agricultural best practices.
  • Mentorship Dialogues: Facilitating discussions and mentorship opportunities between seasoned agricultural professionals and aspiring women farmers.
  • Gold in the Soil Documentaries and Awards: Showcasing the stories of women who have made significant contributions to agriculture.
  • Exhibition: Displaying unprocessed and processed farm produce alongside sponsor products, highlighting the innovative work being done by women in agriculture.

Celebrating Excellence in Agriculture

One of the highlights of the event was the prestigious Gold in the Soil Awards, which recognized outstanding women in agriculture across 17 categories. With over 35 nominations, 18 exceptional women were honored for their commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. Each nominee received a bag of organic fertilizer, while the awardees were additionally presented with two bags of inorganic fertilizer from YARA, wellington boots, and weedicides. The overall winner was awarded a tricycle, in addition to the aforementioned prizes.

A Bright Future for Women in Agriculture

The Gold in the Soil Awards not only celebrate the achievements of women in agriculture but also underscore their crucial role in ensuring food security and promoting environmental stewardship. The event highlighted the importance of supporting and investing in women within the agricultural sector, as they continue to make significant strides towards sustainable development.

As the event came to a close, it was evident that the 6th edition of the Gold in the Soil Awards had left an indelible mark on all who attended, inspiring a renewed commitment to overcoming barriers and advancing the role of women in agribusiness.
