CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF GHANA LAUNCHES ENDOWMENT FUND TO SECURE LONG-TERM GROWTH By Adam Siaka | Sunyani, April 5, 2025

The Catholic University of Ghana (CUG) marked a historic milestone on Saturday, April 5, 2025, with the official launch of its Endowment Fund — a strategic initiative aimed at ensuring the institution’s long-term financial sustainability.

The momentous event, held on the university campus in Sunyani, was chaired by Dr. Sarfo Asamoah, CEO of Medcourt Pharmacy. In his opening remarks, Dr. Asamoah hailed the launch as a defining moment in the university’s journey, commending the Chairman of the Fundraising Committee, Rev. Fr. Professor Augustine Owusu Addo, who doubled as the Dean of the Education Faculty for his leadership and vision.

“Sustainable academic excellence hinges on consistent and reliable funding,” Dr. Asamoah noted. “This Endowment Fund is a bold and necessary step toward securing CUG’s future.”

The occasion drew dignitaries from across the country, including traditional rulers from the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, representatives of public and private institutions, and prominent members of the Catholic Church, all united in support of the university’s noble cause.

Addressing the gathering, CUG Vice Chancellor Professor Daniels Kwabena Obeng Ofori emphasized that the Endowment Fund fulfills a key government requirement following the university’s receipt of its Presidential Charter three years ago.

“This fund is more than a financial mechanism — it’s a symbol of our collective commitment to safeguarding the future of Catholic higher education in Ghana,” Prof. Ofori stated. He expressed gratitude to all who have already donated, noting that every contribution strengthens the university’s mission. “We invite all Ghanaians, alumni, and development partners to join us in building this legacy,” he said.

Donations can be made through CUG’s official GCB Bank account: 7011010163634.

The event, themed “Help Build CUG”, celebrated the university’s contributions to education and development in the Bono Region and beyond. Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Bishop of the Sunyani Catholic Diocese and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, underscored the transformative power of education.

“The Catholic University of Ghana has served both Catholics and non-Catholics, contributing significantly to intellectual and social growth,” he said. He announced a fundraising target of GHS 300 million as seed capital for the fund. “We are laying the foundation for generations. Education sustains life, and this is a legacy we must all help build.”

The launch received notable political and national support. Former President John Agyeikum Kuffuor made a heartfelt donation of GHS 100,000.00, and Members of Parliament, including Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, pledged their support to the university’s vision.

The Endowment Fund is expected to support infrastructure development, faculty capacity building, student scholarships, and research initiatives — all funded through interest earned on the seed capital.

The Catholic University of Ghana is calling on individuals, corporate organizations, and philanthropic institutions to join in this transformative effort.

Donations can be made via GCB Bank Account: 7011010163634.
